Axel Kleinlein Steps Down as Spokesperson for Bund der Versicherten (BdV)

The consumer advocates from the Bund der Versicherten (BdV) must build a new 'sharp critic of insurers.' The current board spokesperson, Axel Kleinlein, will leave the BdV at the end of September after nearly eleven years of service to focus more on scientific and substantive topics as a self-employed professional.

As a mathematician, he now wishes to delve deeper into the world of insurance mathematics, according to a press release. "I will definitely not switch to the side of the insurers and will, of course, remain loyal to the BdV as a member," promises Kleinlein. "With Axel Kleinlein, the Bund der Versicherten e. V. is losing an important voice," said the spokesperson of the Supervisory Board, Edda Castelló. "His nickname 'sharpest critic of insurers' is completely deserved."

This is already the second departure of Kleinlein: The BdV experienced turbulent times in the early years of Kleinlein's tenure, as he was recalled for a few months in 2013. At that time, Kleinlein was able to return thanks to the intervention of the members. "Unlike back then, I now see the BdV as very well-positioned and well-prepared for the future," said Kleinlein.

With Kleinlein's departure, Stephen Rehmke is set to take over the role as spokesperson of the board. Furthermore, press spokesperson Bianca Boss is expected to join the association's board from July 1st.

Leadership Transition at a Key Consumer Watchdog

The departure of Axel Kleinlein marks a significant moment for the Bund der Versicherten, one of Germany's most prominent consumer protection organizations focused on the insurance sector. Known for his rigorous, mathematically-grounded criticism of industry practices, Kleinlein has been a formidable advocate for policyholder rights for over a decade.

His legacy includes holding insurers accountable on issues like transparency, policy conditions, and claims handling. The appointment of Stephen Rehmke as his successor signals a continuation of the BdV's core mission to represent consumer interests. The promotion of Bianca Boss to the board also suggests a strengthening of the organization's communications and public outreach capabilities.

What This Means for German Insurance Consumers

For you as an insurance customer in Germany, the BdV plays a crucial role as an independent voice. It provides guidance, publishes critical analyses of insurance products, and lobbies for fairer industry practices. A stable leadership transition ensures this watchdog function continues without interruption.

Kleinlein's plan to remain a member and continue his work in actuarial science from the outside may still benefit consumers through independent research and commentary. The incoming leadership will face ongoing challenges such as digitalization of insurance, the rise of new risk categories (e.g., cyber), and ensuring consumer protection keeps pace with industry innovation.

The BdV's work remains vital in a complex market, helping you navigate policies and understand your rights. This change in leadership is a reminder of the importance of strong, independent consumer advocacy in the financial services sector.
