Generali Implements Major Leadership Restructuring for DACH Region and German Operations
In a significant strategic move, the Italian insurance giant Generali has announced a comprehensive restructuring of its leadership for the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and its German subsidiary. This reorganization aims to strengthen market position, drive innovation, and enhance profitability across one of Europe's most critical insurance markets.
The creation of the dedicated DACH business unit in September 2022 marked a pivotal shift. According to company statements, its core mission is to "accelerate value creation through synergies in revenue, costs, and innovation, to exploit market potential, and thus further drive profitable and sustainable growth." This regional consolidation strategy mirrors approaches seen in other global markets, where insurers streamline operations to better compete and serve customers.
New DACH Leadership Structure Takes Shape
The leadership framework for this new unit is now fully formed. Giovanni Liverani, who served as CEO of Generali Deutschland from 2015, leads the DACH unit as its CEO. Reporting to him are the country managers: Stefan Lehmann for Germany, Gregor Pilgram for Austria, and Christoph Schmallenbach for Switzerland.
Effective January 1, 2023, further key appointments complete the DACH Management Board:
- Katrin Gruber (54) assumes the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for DACH. She previously served as interim CFO for DACH and as Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for Generali Deutschland AG. She will also take on the position of Chief Business Performance Officer for the German entity.
- Marcela Středová (46) takes over Gruber's former responsibilities on the DACH Management Board and becomes the new Chief Risk Officer for Generali Deutschland AG. A Generali veteran since 2008, she was most recently CRO and Head of Actuarial Function at Generali CEE Holding in Prague.
- Jean-Pierre Schmid (59), already the Chief Human Resources and Organization Officer for DACH, will now also hold the same title for Generali Deutschland AG.
- Dr. Robert Wehn, who became Chief IT, Digital and Operations Officer for DACH in early November, will additionally be appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Generali Deutschland AG from January 1, 2023, a role he has held on an interim basis.
Strategic Implications for the Insurance Market
This leadership overhaul signals Generali's deep commitment to the DACH region. By aligning top talent across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland under a unified structure, the insurer aims to:
- Enhance Operational Efficiency: Break down silos to leverage scale and shared resources.
- Drive Digital Transformation: The appointment of a dedicated Chief IT, Digital and Operations Officer highlights a focus on innovation and customer experience.
- Strengthen Risk and Financial Governance: Consolidating CFO and CRO roles at the DACH level ensures cohesive financial strategy and risk management.
For customers and agents, these changes are designed to create a more integrated, responsive, and innovative partner in Generali. The focus on sustainable growth and market potential suggests new products and services tailored to the DACH region's needs may be on the horizon.
Looking Ahead: Generali's Position in a Competitive Landscape
As one of the world's largest insurance groups, Generali's restructuring in the DACH region is a closely watched development. It reflects broader trends in the global insurance industry where consolidation, digitalization, and strategic regional management are key to maintaining competitiveness. The success of this new leadership team will be measured by its ability to deliver on the promised synergies and growth, ultimately benefiting policyholders through enhanced service and stability.
This move underscores the dynamic nature of the insurance sector and the continuous evolution required to meet future challenges and opportunities.
