HUK-COBURG Strengthens Leadership with the Return of a Proven Expert

In a strategic move to bolster its executive team, HUK-COBURG, Germany's largest personal lines insurer for private customers, has announced a significant change to its board of directors. Effective October 1, 2025, Dr. Degenhard Meier will assume responsibility for the company's Personenversicherung (personal insurance) division, succeeding Hans Olav Herøy upon his retirement. This appointment marks the return of a seasoned executive with deep institutional knowledge and a modern skill set crucial for the future of insurance.

A Homecoming with a Wealth of Experience

Dr. Degenhard Meier is no stranger to the Franconian insurer. From 2014 to 2019, he held several key leadership positions at HUK-COBURG, including department head, authorized signatory (Prokurist), and Managing Director for "New Mobility Services." His subsequent role at the global reinsurance giant Munich Re significantly broadened his expertise. There, he served as Global Head of Group and Reinsurance Strategy and Global Head of Innovation, giving him a top-tier perspective on global risk trends, strategic portfolio management, and cutting-edge digital transformation in the insurance sector.

Leading the Core Business into the Future

In his new role on the HUK-COBURG board, the 49-year-old native of Munich will be tasked with steering the company's core personal insurance business. This critical division encompasses the group's in-house health insurance (Krankenversicherung) and life insurance (Lebensversicherung) operations. His mandate will likely focus on navigating a competitive market, enhancing customer-centric products, and driving the digital evolution of these core lines—challenges familiar to major insurers worldwide, from US private health insurance providers to carriers offering Medicare Supplement plans.

Strategic Vision for a Digital and Customer-Focused Era

The Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Prof. Dr. Heinrich R. Schradin, emphasized the strategic importance of this appointment. "I am very pleased that we have succeeded in bringing Dr. Degenhard Meier back to HUK-COBURG and have gained a recognized and very broadly experienced insurance expert," Schradin stated.

He further elaborated on Meier's unique qualifications: "Degenhard Meier knows HUK-COBURG, its significance as Germany's largest personal lines insurer, and its strategic challenges very well. Moreover, for many years he has been responsible for developing and implementing digital growth strategies in the insurance industry and has very profound knowledge in the environment of his future area of responsibility. HUK-COBURG will greatly benefit from this experience in its future direction."

What This Means for the Insurance Landscape

This leadership decision signals HUK-COBURG's commitment to blending deep industry experience with forward-thinking innovation. Bringing an executive back from a global reinsurer like Munich Re—akin to a major US reinsurance or strategic advisory firm—highlights the value placed on external best practices and a broad strategic outlook. For customers and the market, it suggests a continued focus on strengthening core personal insurance products while aggressively pursuing digital innovation and customer experience improvements. In a market as essential as personal insurance, which forms the backbone of financial security for millions, such strategic leadership moves are pivotal for long-term stability and growth.
