Signal Iduna Appoints New CEO Torsten Uhlig: A Strategic Shift for 'Momentum 2030'
Effective July 1, 2025, the Signal Iduna Group welcomes a new Chairman of the Board. Torsten Uhlig takes over the leadership of the Dortmund-based insurer from Ulrich Leitermann, who successfully led the company for over twelve years. This transition marks not only a generational change but also the next phase in the future-oriented "Momentum 2030" strategy.
The 59-year-old began his career in 1991 in the sales department of Signal Versicherungen. Through various roles in marketing, sales organization, and field service, he worked his way up to the board. The native of Zittau was most recently responsible for the central areas of sales, marketing, sales service, and corporate relations.
Simultaneously, Alexandra Markovic-Sobau joins as the new Board Member for Sales and Marketing. The 51-year-old business economist comes from Hallesche Privaten Krankenversicherung, where she was responsible for sales for over a decade. She had already started at Signal Iduna as an authorized signatory in May 2025.
With this new dual leadership, the Dortmund-based insurer is repositioning itself for the coming years. At the core is the corporate strategy "Momentum 2030", which aims for sustainable growth, increased efficiency, and stronger customer orientation. The experience and networks of the two new top executives are expected to help bring this course to life.
"Drawing from our history as a mutual insurance association, we have a unique positioning in the skilled trades, commerce, and public sector. Together with the board team, my goal is to strengthen and further expand our role as a leading insurer for these target groups. To achieve this, we will consistently pursue our strategic direction 'Momentum 2030'," says Torsten Uhlig.
What 'Momentum 2030' Means for the Future of Signal Iduna
The leadership change at Signal Iduna is a clear signal of commitment to its strategic vision. "Momentum 2030" is not just a plan but a comprehensive roadmap designed to navigate the evolving insurance landscape. For you as a customer or partner, this strategy translates into several key focus areas:
- Sustainable Growth: The company aims to solidify its market leadership in its core segments while exploring new, profitable avenues.
- Enhanced Customer Orientation: Expect more tailored products, streamlined digital services, and a focus on improving the overall customer journey.
- Operational Efficiency: Leveraging technology and process optimization to provide better value and faster service.
- Digital Transformation: Continued investment in digital tools and platforms to meet modern expectations for accessibility and convenience in insurance services.
The appointments of Uhlig and Markovic-Sobau, both with deep roots in sales and customer-facing operations, underscore the strategy's emphasis on driving growth through strong client relationships and market expertise.
Leadership in Insurance: A Catalyst for Change
Executive transitions in major insurance companies like Signal Iduna often serve as catalysts for renewed strategic focus. In a sector facing challenges like digital disruption, changing customer behaviors, and economic pressures, strong leadership is crucial. The move to appoint a long-time internal candidate like Torsten Uhlig ensures continuity of corporate culture while injecting fresh momentum into strategic goals.
Similarly, bringing in external expertise, as with Alexandra Markovic-Sobau from the health insurance sector, can introduce valuable new perspectives, especially in areas like marketing and multi-channel distribution. This balanced approach of internal promotion and strategic external hiring is a common practice among leading insurers aiming to stay competitive.
For stakeholders, this leadership renewal at Signal Iduna represents a commitment to stability and forward-thinking management, ensuring the company is well-positioned to tackle future challenges and seize opportunities in the German and European insurance markets.
