FragFina: How to Win Clients with SEO & Create Content That Works in the AI Search Era
Whether you're starting your training, changing careers, or simply aiming to improve, learning from the best in the insurance and finance industry is the ultimate strategy. In the Königsmacher Podcast, I interview top performers to discuss their life, career, and path to success. The subtitle says it all: The insurance industry podcast with the best of today for the best of tomorrow.
Building a Brand Without a Face: The Rise of FragFina
This time, my guest was Benjamin de Groot (known for #justdoit #nothowwevealwaysdoneit #opinionsarenotfacts). Together with Dennis Rose, he founded FragFina in 2017. Today, they offer guide content aimed at empowering users and clients to make independent, well-informed financial decisions. Their content is deliberately simple and understandable, presented in video and text formats to make financial topics accessible to everyone.
From the beginning, they made a crucial decision: not to put themselves in the spotlight. Instead, they placed a comic character, "Fina," at the center of their communication. Benjamin explains: "We consciously didn't want to be a personal brand. If you build everything around a single person, everything depends on that person, and if they're no longer there one day, the brand is gone."
Their goal was clear from the start: "That FragFina becomes big, so big that we can't handle all the inquiries ourselves." So, they built a website, wrote texts, and thought, "We're online, now the clients will come. But of course, that wasn't the case," Benjamin recounts. They made the same mistake many insurance agents and financial advisors still make online today. He explains what that mistake was in the podcast.
The SEO Awakening: From Being Invisible to Being Found
That was the moment he decided to find out why no one could find them. "Then we started learning about search engine optimization (SEO) and basically consumed everything available on YouTube about the topic." They wanted to understand what it really takes to be found on Google. Spoiler alert: "In the end, Google doesn't even want to play this game where you try to understand and trick the algorithm. Google wants you to simply deliver the best result for the user."
And that's what they do today. But it involves a lot of work, especially continuous effort. Benjamin explains: "We now put a lot of thought into the development of the website." They continuously work on the structure, architecture, and content of the site. Topics are re-prioritized, user flows are deliberately changed, and content is consistently pruned. The goal is always to offer users the best possible user experience (UX) during their customer journey, ideally reaching them very late in that journey when they are ready to make a decision.
The Art of Deep-Dive Content: Quality Over Quantity
For this, Benjamin invests significant time in page content. When asked how long he spends on texts, he answers: "An article can sometimes take ten or fifteen days if it's meant to be in-depth and sustainable." He focuses on evergreen content—material with lasting value that works months or years later. This is a critical lesson for creating SEO content for insurance that ranks for competitive terms like "best life insurance policy" or "how does health insurance work."
| FragFina's Content & SEO Strategy | Key Principle | Result & Lesson for Advisors |
|---|---|---|
| Brand Foundation | Built around a comic character (Fina), not individuals. | Creates a scalable, durable brand independent of any single person. |
| Content Philosophy | Evergreen, in-depth guides that empower user decision-making. | Some articles take 10-15 days to write. Quality builds authority and trust. |
| SEO Focus | Understand and fulfill user intent, don't try to "trick" Google. | Moved from being invisible to generating more leads than they can handle. |
| Website Optimization | Continuous work on structure, UX, and pruning outdated content. | Aims to guide users seamlessly through their financial decision journey. |
| Adapting to AI Search | Acknowledge changing search behavior (e.g., ChatGPT). | "Clicks are down, but conversions are not." Focus on content that answers questions comprehensively. |
Adapting to the AI Search Revolution
Naturally, we also address how ChatGPT and similar tools have changed the landscape, as fewer people are searching exclusively via Google. He explains: "I also don't see SEO as dead. The clicks are decreasing, but the conversions are not." What you should consider when creating content for the age of AI search and generative AI is best explained by him in the podcast. At the end, I also asked Benjamin which books or YouTube channels he recommends:
- Book: "The Design of Everyday Things" by Don Norman (on psychology and design).
- YouTube Channels: He shares his top picks for learning about SEO, UX, and marketing in the episode.
Key Takeaways for Insurance and Finance Professionals
Benjamin de Groot's journey with FragFina offers a masterclass in digital marketing for financial services. The core lessons are vital for insurance agents, financial advisors, and fintech startups:
- Solve for the User, Not the Algorithm: Create content that genuinely helps people understand complex topics like retirement planning, insurance coverage, or investment basics.
- Invest in Depth: In a world of AI-generated fluff, comprehensive, well-researched content is a competitive moat.
- Build a Scalable Brand: Consider whether a personal brand is right for your long-term goals or if a thematic brand (like FragFina) offers more flexibility.
- Embrace the Shift: SEO is evolving with AI-powered search. Focus on being the best answer, and the qualified leads will follow, even if overall click volume changes.
What you can learn from the recommended book and channels, how to quickly spot a good SEO coach, what to learn from the poor user experience of car rental sites, and much more—we discuss all this in the current episode of the Königsmacher Podcast.
