The Digital Nomad Dream: From Fantasy to Reality
Who hasn't felt it? Everything and everyone is grating: work, bureaucracy, people. You just want to say, "I'm out of here," and actually leave. I'm not talking about a pilgrimage like Hape Kerkeling on the Camino de Santiago, but about emigrating or at least living somewhere else for an extended period.
But how do you pull this off without ending up as a cautionary tale on a reality TV show? It's simple: You talk to people who have already taken this step, or with experts who understand emigration, or ideally, with both.
And that's exactly what I do in our podcast series: "I Want to Leave," created in cooperation with the BDAE (Federal Association of German Employers Abroad). A big THANK YOU to them!
In this series, we discuss the challenges of living as a digital nomad while working as an insurance broker or freelancer. This final installment, Part 3, dives deep into the practicalities of working remotely, managing teams across continents, navigating international health insurance, and securing your retirement as a nomad.
Part 3: Mastering Your Nomadic Work & Life
In Part 1, we covered foundational topics like the legal definition of a digital nomad, the consequences of this lifestyle choice, deregistering from your local registration office, and key tax considerations for expats.
In Part 2, we focused on practical frameworks: obtaining the right digital nomad visa, choosing the correct international health insurance, and managing finances (cash vs. digital payments worldwide).
Now, in Part 3, we get to the core of sustaining the lifestyle. I speak with Robin Lerch, a digital nomad since 2023 and founder of an insurance brokerage catering specifically to nomads, and Omer Dotou from the BDAE, who advises companies and individuals on emigration. We tackle the crucial questions about building a life, not just a trip.
1. Building Productive Remote Work Routines
Freedom without structure leads to chaos. As a digital nomad, especially in a client-focused field like insurance, establishing a disciplined routine is non-negotiable. This involves:
- Designated Workspace: Creating a consistent, professional environment, whether in a co-working space or a quiet corner of your accommodation.
- Time Zone Management: Strategically scheduling client calls and team syncs when working across continents. Tools like World Time Buddy are essential.
- Communication Protocols: Establishing clear norms with your team or clients (e.g., preferred channels, response time expectations) to maintain professionalism and trust.
2. Navigating Global Health Insurance & Quality of Care
This is arguably the most critical insurance for expats. Your domestic German public health insurance (GKV) or a standard US health plan (like an HMO/PPO) will not adequately cover you long-term abroad.
| Insurance Type | Coverage Scope | Best For | Key Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| International Private Health Insurance | Worldwide coverage (often excluding the USA or with a USA rider). Inpatient & outpatient care, medical evacuation. | Long-term nomads, frequent travelers, those seeking high-quality private care globally. | Ensure it covers repatriation and has a direct billing network in your target countries. |
| Travel Medical Insurance | Short-term emergency medical coverage for trips (e.g., 30 days to 1 year). | Short stints or as a supplement. Not suitable for permanent nomadic life. | Check for adventure/sports activity coverage if needed. Often has low coverage limits. |
| Local Health Insurance | Coverage within a specific country, often required for certain digital nomad visas. | Nomads planning an extended base (6+ months) in one country. | Research the quality of the local healthcare system. May need to be combined with a travel policy for trips elsewhere. |
For US citizens: While abroad, you generally cannot use Medicare (except in very limited circumstances near US borders). You will need a robust international health plan. Similarly, ACA marketplace plans are designed for domestic US coverage.
3. Retirement Planning Without a Fixed Address
Out of sight must not mean out of mind. Saving for retirement as a nomad requires proactive strategy:
- Tax-Advantaged Accounts: Understand the implications for your German Riester-Rente or US 401(k)/IRA. Contributions may be affected by your tax residency status. Consult a cross-border financial advisor for expats.
- Portable Pension Plans: Explore international pension or investment schemes not tied to a single country's employment system.
- Diversified Investments: Build a globally accessible investment portfolio (e.g., through a brokerage with an international presence) to hedge against currency and single-market risk.
4. The Human Element: Combating Loneliness & Building Community
The Instagram highlight reel doesn't show the loneliness. Prioritize:
- Intentional Community: Join nomad hubs, co-living spaces, or online communities (like Nomad List) to connect with like-minded people.
- Maintaining Roots: Schedule regular check-ins with family and old friends. The digital nomad life can strain relationships if not managed.
- Mental Health: Acknowledge the stress of constant change. Incorporate stability rituals and consider international health insurance that includes mental health support.
Your Action Plan Before You Go
- Legal & Tax Foundation: Finalize your residency status, understand your tax obligations in your home country and abroad (Part 1 topics).
- Logistical Framework: Secure the necessary visa and comprehensive, nomad-specific health insurance (Part 2 topics).
- Life & Work System: Design your remote work setup, research healthcare quality in your destinations, and create a retirement savings roadmap (Part 3 topics).
The dream of freedom is achievable, but it requires replacing the rigid structure of a stationary life with a deliberate, self-designed framework. It's about trading one set of challenges for another—and ensuring you're insured, prepared, and professionally grounded for all of them.
