Karsten Crede Departs ERGO: A Look at His Legacy in Automotive and Digital Insurance
"I set my foot in the air, and it carried me" – with this line from poet Hilde Domin, Karsten Crede concluded a LinkedIn post announcing the end of his tenure at the ERGO Group. "After seven intensive years, during which I built ERGO Mobility Solutions together with my excellent team, my time at ERGO Group AG is now coming to an end. Our enthusiasm for the idea of developing automotive insurance solutions based on technology and vehicle data has driven us," said Crede.
An ERGO spokesperson confirmed to Versicherungsbote that Crede, Chairman of the Board of ERGO Direkt Versicherung and a member of the board of ERGO Digital Venture, is leaving the insurer at his own request.
When it was announced in 2017 that Crede would switch from Allianz to ERGO, he was already considered a proven automotive insurance expert in the industry: At the Cologne-based Gerling Group, he was Head of Product Management for Broker Sales until 2003. Until 2010, Crede held various positions for the Volkswagen Group and its subsidiaries, even becoming a member of the top management of Volkswagen AG. Then came the move to the Allianz Group, where he also made it to the board of Allianz Versicherung-AG.
During his tenure as Chairman of the Board of ERGO Direkt Versicherung and as a member of the board of ERGO Digital Venture, several collaborations with renowned partners were initiated, for example with [Partner A] or [Partner B].
Crede will remain at ERGO until the end of the year. This is also to accompany the integration of the ERGO Mobility Solutions (EMS) unit he initiated into the composite insurance division of ERGO.
Crede left his plans for the time after ERGO open in his LinkedIn post: "A new chapter in my life is beginning for me. In doing so, I trust in the line from poet Hilde Domin, which has accompanied me for a long time: 'I set my foot in the air, and it carried me.'"
The Legacy of ERGO Mobility Solutions and Telematics Insurance
Karsten Crede's departure marks the end of a significant chapter for ERGO in the telematics and connected car insurance space. Under his leadership, ERGO Mobility Solutions (EMS) was established as a dedicated unit to develop technology-driven, usage-based insurance products. This aligns with the global trend towards InsurTech and personalized premiums based on actual driving behavior.
The integration of EMS into ERGO's main composite business suggests that telematics and data-driven models are moving from a niche innovation to a core component of the insurer's automotive portfolio. Crede's expertise was instrumental in forging key partnerships, likely with automakers, technology providers, or mobility platforms, to embed insurance into the broader automotive ecosystem.
Leadership Transitions in the Evolving Insurance Landscape
High-profile departures like Crede's often signal strategic shifts or new beginnings. For ERGO, a member of the Munich Re Group, it represents an opportunity to consolidate its digital and traditional auto insurance operations under a potentially new leadership vision. The insurance industry is seeing increased movement of executives with deep specialization—like Crede in automotive—between major players, driven by the competition to lead in digital transformation and niche markets.
For the market, Crede's next move will be closely watched. Given his track record, he may pursue opportunities in mobility-as-a-service (MaaS), a startup in the InsurTech sector, or a leadership role in another major insurer looking to accelerate its automotive or digital ventures.
His departure underscores the dynamic nature of the insurance executive landscape, where expertise in blending insurance fundamentals with cutting-edge technology is in high demand.
